Within the Schwechat Airport in Vienna, the biggest solar power plant in Austria has been opened.

On an area of 24 hectares, a total of 55,000 solar panels have been installed, which will produce more than 30 million kWh of power a year. This will cover the needs of the 250 companies which are located within the airport, as well as one third of the annual consumption of electrical energy of the airport itself.

The next step is the construction of seven hectares of solar panels, with which the production of electricity will exceed the consumption. Along with the seven existing facilities, the airport will reach carbon-neutrality next year.

– However, the airport is only one small part of air traffic. We also need newer airplanes which spend less kerosine, more efficient flight routes and carbon-neutral kerosine – explains a member of the management of the airport, Julian Jaeger.

Climate protection in Vienna, whose goal is climate-neutrality by 2040, is one of the priorities.

– For years now, the city has been investing in renewable energy sources, and solar energy plays an important role in it. Vienna plans to expand the production of electrical energy through solar panels on a mass scale – stated the mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig.

From now on, in the capital of Austria, permits for small photovoltaic systems will no longer be required, Ludwig added.

– The biggest solar power plant in Austria is an important step toward carbon-neutrality. The climate and energy program of Lower Austria plans a reduction of carbon-dioxide emissions by 36% and the production of 2,000 GWh of power from solar energy by 2030. The program entails more than 350 measures that are implemented gradually – stated Johanna Mikl-Leitner, the provincial governor of Lower Austria, as reported by the Telegraf portal.
