We Currently Get One Fourth of Electricity from Wind, Biomass and Sun – How Close is Serbia to the “Green Energy” Goal?

According to the final statistical data, the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the gross final consumption of energy in 2019 in Serbia amounted to 21.44%. Although there is still no official data for 2020, the share of RES in the consumption of electricity is expected to be around 25%, the Ministry of Energy and Mining says for eKapija.

– The data for 2020 will be published in February 2022 and they are expected to show a considerable change based on the detailed research carried out as per order of the Energy Community. The research has shown that the consumption of biomass in Serbia is far greater than expected, so the share of RES in the gross final consumption of energy is realistically higher too and it is expected to be around 25%, that is, to be far closer to the previously set goal of 27% in 2020 – the ministry says.

Compared to 2019, the increase in 2020 amounts to 3.56%. Let us remind that, compared to 2018, the increase in 2019 was 1.12%.

The energy from wind farms contributed to the increase of 1.12%, whereas the energy from biomass contributed the most to the increase – 3.56%.

The minister of mining and energy, Zorana Mihajlovic, said in April 2021 that Serbia’s vision was to have at least 40% of the produced energy from RES by 2040.

Let us remind that the Government of Serbia recently adopted two decrees that pertain to the regulation of the field of renewable energy sources. These are the Decree on Market Premium and the Decree on the Market Premium Agreement Model.

Recently, the Management Board of the RES Serbia association expressed a concern over the future of renewable energy sources in Serbia, following the setting of the maximum purchase price for the purposes of auctions for electrical energy form wind farms, which, due to the two-way premium model, could cause investors to decide not to take part in auctions and finance institutions and banks not to finance projects.
