The minister of trade, tourism and telecommunications of Serbia, Tatjana Matic, has stated that the auction for the allocation of frequencies for the implementation of the 5G network in Serbia will not take place this year and that its opening should be expected by the end of the first half of 2022.

At a business talk with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia (AmCham), she said that the preparations for the implementation of the 5G network had started in early 2020, but that they had been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Regarding the importance of the implementation of the 5G network for an increase of the competitiveness of the Serbian economy in the region, but also globally, Matic stated that Serbian companies were ready, and that the preparation of the Rulebook on the criteria for the minimum participation and the auction for 5G frequencies were expected for the first half of 2022.

Commenting on the importance of the 5G signal, Matic emphasized that what’s crucial for the success of this project, in addition to the auction itself, was the readiness of telecommunications operators to invest in the infrastructure which will enable the full range of services, from the agrarian sector to medicine and others, which 5G can fully enable.

Joint campaign against illegal e-trade

On this occasion, the joint campaign of AmCham and the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications of Serbia “A Safe Click for a Certain Purchase” was launched to the end of suppressing illegal online trade. Online trade is developing at a rapid pace, replacing traditional shopping increasingly often, and during the pandemic period, it increased 300%, while at the same time a large percentage of illegal trade moved online.
