The Hungarian town of Szentes has presented its first tram-train, which should start operating on the line between Szeged and Hodmezovasarhely this autumn.

Around ten thousand people commute on this line each day. If the plans are realized, the tram-train will soon reach Subotica, RTV Panon reports.

– Our new dream is for the tram-train to connect Hodmezovasarhely, Szeged and Subotica in the next three years. The future of this region and the quality of life of people in this area would thereby improve considerably compared to thirty, fifty or a hundred years ago – said Janos Lazar, a commissioner of the Hungarian government for the experimental project of a tram-train line between Szeged and Hodmezovasarhely.

According to Janos Lazar, this kind of public transport makes for a comfortable 15-minute ride between the centers of the two cities (25 kilometers).

This not only improves the quality of life outside city centers, but also helps working people stay in their areas, and it is also a great help for the young and the old alike.

Lazar points out that 80 billion forints was invested in the project, at no cost to the residents of the two cities.
