Croatia Declaring Economic Belt in the Adriatic
Plenkovic announced on Twitter that he had “consulted with the prime ministers of Slovenia and Italy, Janez Jansa and Giuseppe Conte, regarding the declaration of an exclusive economic belt of Croatia in the Adriatic”.
He said that the government would adopt the report on the process of the consultations and the proposal of the decision on Monday, Hina reports.
Early this month, the parliamentary group of the HDZ party announced that the Croatian Parliament would declare the exclusive economic belt in the Adriatic Sea by the end of the autumn session.
The foreign ministers of Croatia and Italy, Gordan Grlic-Radman and Luigi Di Maio, talked in late November in Zagreb about the declaration of exclusive economic belts on both sides of the Adriatic and confirmed the harmonization of the activities and the readiness to “have negotiations about the borders”.
With the declaration of the exclusive economic belt, the Adriatic will become part of the common waters of the European Union and be subject to the joint policy of the European Commission, Jutarnji List wrote recently.
The biggest benefit, according to those familiar with the subject, is that the fishers from third countries would no longer be able to fish in these waters without an agreement with the EC, which is a complicated and long process.
