Elektroprivreda Srbije is developing renewable energy source projects. The preparation of the construction of a solar and wind farm in Kostolac, with 70 MW of power in total, is in progress, stated the strategy manager of EPS, Aleksandar Jakovljevic.

Furthermore, private investors are expected to invest in the construction of the RES-using capacities of around 500 MW, above all in wind farms, Jakovljevic said at the Kopaonik Business Forum at the panel on circular economy and sustainable development.

He reminded that EPS was the biggest electricity producer in Serbia, with its 98% share in the production. The structure of production in EPS is such that over 60% is produced from coal and over 30% from hydro potential.

– We need renewable energy sources and we need to implement them to the greatest extent possible, but they are not an alternative, but only a complement to the coal and the current production mix. It's important for the production to be even more in line with the EU regulations – Jakovljevic said.

According to him, EPS has already invested over EUR 200 million in environmental protection, and the plan is to invest another EUR 600 million.

– The plan is to reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide particles by more than 90% and of nitrogen oxides by nearly 50% - Jakovljevic said.

Serbia produces 26 TWh from coal and around 10 TWh in hydro power plants a year. The energy strategy envisions that Serbia should be producing more than 4 TWh from RES by 2025, whereas the action plan envisions 2 TWh by 2020.
