The decision on expanding the gas storage Banatski Dvor will be made in the final quarter of the current year, says Dusan Bajatovic for Novosti. He says that various technical and economic studies are being carried out at the moment and that the expansion, following the official approval by the Government of Serbia, might begin as early as 2017.

Alternative gas sources have been on the Government's work schedule for the past year and a half, Aleksandar Vucic said as well. He invited those who had suggestions to present them to him.

– We will expand the storage space. The goal is to have two billion cubic meters of gas reserves. If we reach that, the country is secure – Vucic said and added that Serbia had three to four months' worth of reserves, but that there was no political solution.

Serbia currently needs around two billion cubic meters of gas a year, and in 10 years, Vucic said, when the industrial production is expected to increase, 3.5 billion cubic meters will be needed.

Until the relations between the European Union and Russia regarding natural gas are resolved, Serbia can only expand the existing storage space in order not to lose the energy source in the midst of a potential blockage of the Ukraine pipeline during the heating season.

The expansion of Banatski Dvor capacities is not a long-term solution to the problem of energy security in Serbia, according to Vojislav Vuletic of the Gas Association.

– If Russia stops delivering gas through Ukraine in 2019, we too will lose our energy source. A larger Banatski Dvor will only buy us a few months more.

For now, the expansion from 450 to 750 million cubic meters of gas is planned, and the limit is two billion cubic meters. The chairman of Srbijagas said that the cost of the project was EUR 70 million. However, the amount won't be paid by Serbia, since the state owns only 49% of Banatski Dvor, whereas Gazprom Export is the majority owner. The joint company is supposed to pay for the expansion only.

Three scenarios

In the first third of 2016, Srbijagas and Gazprom signed an agreement which is supposed to enable the expansion of capacities of the underground gas storage Banatski Dvor. At the time, three scenarios of expansion were presented, differing in the capacity of the storage and the daily maximum amounts.
